Haystack Mountain is a Boulder County Landmark of historical significance and a haven
for wildlife. However it is made of shale. Rocks slide easily out of place
and tumble away, tree roots don't strengthen its slopes, nature doesn't
repair the damage. It is a soft and fragile hillside. Even foot traffic adds to the erosion.
Mountain bike
damage cannot be repaired.
Alignments for the trail have been drawn around
Haystack Mountain. Even a trail around its perimeter
or next to the roads nearby would have serious consequences. Out of the +40,000
people expected on this trail, the number who may leave the trail to
head up the mountain would slowly destroy its unique gifts.
Arapahoe Chief Niwot
warned early settlers:
"People seeing the beauty of this valley will want to stay,
and their staying will be the undoing of the beauty."
Don't let Haystack
Mountain's beauty be undone.
Protect Haystack from the
influx of +40,000 people who will not understand the damage they would
do. Insist that a trail not be lain in this valley.
